San Agustín should be on a list of places to see in Colombia for both archaeology and nature lovers. It's out of the way and can be tough to get to, but it's worth the effort.
A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995, the archaeological park is considered the world's largest necropolis and contains the biggest collection of religious monuments and megalithic sculptures in Latin America.
You could spend up to three days exploring the area around San Agustín. Two popular day trips are possible. One is on horseback and another is on a truck. Both take visitors through gorgeous scenery to more remote sections of the archaeological park as well as a few natural sites.
What's there to do in town? Eat! San Agustín has some excellent restaurants. We personally recommend Restaurante Italiano da Ugo and Altos de Yerbabuena.
